Corzine Administration Planning Water Quality Initiatives

by BRUCE KATCHER
Through campaign literature, transition team reports, and appointee statements, both New Jersey Governor John Corzine and newly named New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection ("NJDEP") Commissioner Lisa Jackson have indicated that the prior administration's initiative to reclassify surface waters to C1 status (the most stringent level of water quality protection) will continue. Other water initiatives of the new administration are likely to include efforts to add riparian buffer requirements to non-C1 surface waters, further minimize impacts from non-point source pollution and promote the adoption and implementation of Total Maximum Daily Load ("TMDL") requirements.
